In this country the artificial envornment they're grown in is polytunnels. They're empty here in w .mids. at mo, but I wouldn't have thought they were currnetly growing anywhere in UK. I'd guess if you're seeing fresh strawberries (they were def in supermarket at Christmas, but I can't say I've been looking since) then they're flown in from abroad.
I saw fresh strawberries the other day in Tesco from Spain. They would probably not taste of much this time of year and certainly not having been brought all that way. I think strawberries are one of those things that should be eaten in season and sourced as locally as possible.
I love soft fruit but get annoyed by the standard of the ones in the supermarkets, they come from abroad, they look fantastic but are tasteless and pricey, go to the farmshop when they are in season, raspberries are beautiful here in Scotland!
British strawberries are best and they usually come out in June / July. I usually go strawberry picking so I know what I'm getting. Its a bit cheaper that way too. I have tried growing my own but they always go wormy!
