hi I have an ipod video (second hand) battery doesn't last long, I charged it on a wall charger and after two hours it got so hot I stopped it. It seemed to have died and wouldn't switch on, I left it to cool then it turned on and all the music erased itself which I only put on that morning, what I wondered was is my ipod faulty or the charger?

Could be both.

The problems with buying this kind of thing second hand -- you don't know how it's been used previously.

Rechargeable batteries (such as inside the iPod) only last so long.
