80s Film about Fake Exchange Students

Hi! I have a question about an obscure 80s movie. It's about 2 unpopular high school kids-- a boy and a girl. In search of popularity, they decide to pretend to be exchange students. The girl, who is fluent in French, perms her hair and pretends to be French. The boy slicks his hair and goes tanning and pretends to be Italian. Amazingly, they become popular, until the boy's tanning lamp breaks or something. At the end, the boy and girl are found out as the nerds they were/are. However, they fall in love and are happy together. All ideas are much appreciated!! Thanks!

The film is called Student Exchange as I taped it off the TV one time - she talks in a fake french accent the whole time - and He talks in a fake Italian accent - the girl always works behind the scenes on the school shows but has a secret desire to be on stage as they both feel invisible - she gets her wish and lands the lead as the french girl and gets asked out by the school hunk - but in the end falls for her friend - it ends with them being told they've been allowed to keep their college or university places - as when they were caught out - the headteacher threatened to inform the Ivy league schools about them - I taped it the once but watched it quite a few times as I was the geeky kid at school and it appealed to me to get one up on the cool kids

I found the old copy I had of this the other night - It had been on Disney - did you know that Heather Graham was one of the female leads - she went out with the Italian faker and also Maura Tierney who plays Abbey from ER was the bitchy girl in it
