I feel tired, go to bed and lay awake for hours and hours. I do not eat anything, I only drink Ovaltine and I don't have any worries. I cannot understand why I cannot sleep ! As anyone had this problem? I don't to go to the doctor, I don't want sleeping tablets. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am the same; I go to bed and also cannot sleep, so I don't even bother fighting it now. I have spent many a night on the sofa watching TV without even closing my eyes once. Have you tried Nytol? They are pretty good, and are herbal, but again, easy to fight...you have to go to bed the second they start to take effect, but alot say they are good for keeping you asleep, but not getting you to sleep. I actually play solitaire on a handheld pc. It is so mundane that I fall asleep quickly; I won't download any other games as they would be too stimulating!
how old are you lidlicker?i had the same problem recently being 50---just---i tried bach rescue remedy which was ok but better still i now use valerian bought from holland and barret a homeopathic remedy taken half an hour before sleep and it works well.

Thanks both of you for your help. I did try Nytol once, but as you say Toby99 great for keeping you asleep - I felt very drowsy when it was time to get up but still hard to get off.
Thanks GCN for recommending Valarian - I shall go to Holland and Barrett tomorrow (by the way I am in my 60's and not a care in the world)
I am about to have a nice warm both, and some hot milk, so here's hoping tonight...maybe.
Oh yes lidlicker have suffered for years, and it can do your head in.I went to the doctors in the end because it was getting me down.He prescribed a mild sleeping tablet one a night and I have never looked back its wonderful to get a good nights sleep, they well may be adictive but Im not bothered I have peace in my life at long last and I don"t a ppear to have any side effects and that is the main thing.
I'm a bit of a night owl & have been given sleeping tablets & have tried other herbal remedies which all made me feel groggy in the mornings!

So now, if & when I have trouble sleeping, I listen to my spoken word story tapes & soon drift off before the end!

Hope that helps....
You could try a hypnosis CD. I've tried various Paul McKenna ones and while I'm not sure they worked for the problems they were meant for - I have lost weight, but haven't stopped smoking! - I've found I sleep really deeply and well when I've used them.

With my insomnia I get off to sleep easily but then wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep. When I'm having trouble sleeping, I listen to the CD in bed on a portable CD player and usually drift off to sleep naturally before the end (the CD ends automatically, so you don't have to stop it). And I usually sleep well throughout the night.

I'm sure if you search Google there will be hypnosis CDs for insomnia.

Hope you get some sleep soon...

I use to listen to audio books too - they are great for helping you go to sleep - I have never finished a book yet though! How much sleep do you actually get? If you are getting a few regular hours you body may not need anymore. What time do you go to bed?
I used to be the sme until i started reading n bed with the lamp on. Within an hour im usually ready to go to sleep straight away.
hi lidlicker

how did the valerian do?
