Can anybody tell me where the middle-class areas of New York City would be?

Not the posh, rich areas, but not the poor slums either.

Just normal houses and normal families?

most of them, I guess, same as in other cities; but you'd probably get more of them outside Manhattan - Queens, Staten Island etc

Since your average 2 bed flat in Manhattan costs $1.3m none of it is really 'average'.

Agree with jno, most 'normal' families I know there, with 'normal' jobs, live out in Queens.

Whether or not we are normal is still in question.....
"Normal" people live in the outer boroughs of NYC. The most suburban of these is Queens. Though staten Island has some nice areas too, but it is a pain to get to and from.
