Who originally sang "Fantasy"?

I've often heard a version of "Fantasy", the same as that sung by Earth, Wind and Fire in 1977, and by Back Box in 1991, but this was a much nicer version of it played on the radio in the 70's, sounded like a female voice singing it (could've been a high-pitched male of course). I recently heard it again in a restaurant, but didn't get catch the artist. Does anybody know who else sang it, maybe it was never released (I can't find any details in my music chart history book).
