So the new thin Apple air has been launched in the States, probably not long before it comes to our shores. What do you make of it?

I'm not a big Apple fan, but I do like the look of that - as a portable laptop, not as a main and only computer. In all honesty I can go months without using a disk drive - I use usb flash drives, memorty stick things.

Some laptops are huge hulking things with 19" screens - not truly portable in a busy travel setting.
It's for specific purposes. There are many on-the-go people that need their laptop everywhere (in their backpack from places to places), who want something very, very light.

The MacBook Air is lighter and thinner than any other laptop. But think of it as a second computer. The one you use at home is the main computer, this one's for when you're out and about and want to keep your documents with you.

Don't need this kind of portability? Can't afford it? Then it isn't for you.

If you want a small laptop with CD and ethernet and everything else, then they always do the regular MacBook. Not much larger or heavier, and certainly cheaper.

The MacBook Air is for those who demand something smaller and lighter, because they have it with them everywhere. To lose that weight and size, they have to lose things. You can't have everything. This doesn't fit the bill for everyone.
Doesn't matter how small and light it is - it's the 1995 Dell keyboard that I have to lug around that's the problem - I just can't get my fingers round laptop keyboards.
style over substance

there a plent of other manafacturers that could produce a machine this thin etc, if they leave enough out and reduce the spec enough
bazwillrun: Apple never produces style of substance, though many perceive them to. For what it's designed for, it'll be very functional.

However, using a laptop as my main machine, there's no way it's for me, so I won't be buying one.
