For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.not really; it was armies that attacked and besieged castles, which were built partly as a lord's stronghold but also to shelter the local villagers when attacks came. A lord might gather his own army and venture forth to attack someone else's castle, but outside major wars (eg the wars of the roses or the civil war) I don't know that this really happened very often.
Perhaps, like churches, some were razed to the ground by opponents of the Crown, or during times of rebellion, but overall, it's as Dot said. The order of things was from Crown , to church, to Lords and finally peasants, but before the first King of England, when several of them reigned, it's possible there were battles for strongholds amongst those in power.
