Can anyone explain how the answer "nonstarter" is arrived at please? Thanks in advance.

Tricky, seeing as you haven't said what the clue is.
"N is a certain failure" is the clue. I must confess I also put nonstarter in as the answer because it fitted. I think the logic is that 'N' stands for no (or non) and if you say 'something is for starters' then that signifies something certain. Nonstarter is obviously the failure part.
