If the smartphone is Windows Mobile 2003 you will need ActiveSync which you can download from MS. Other smartphones will have their own software to hook up to a PC.

You might be better off using a remote service for backing up data like www.phonesaved.com their service is network and handset independant and you dont even need cables.
