Morning Leela, hunni! Murphy is fast asleep at my feet! We had a good walk and a play with his ball in the park this morning. I thought it would be about 12 months ish, obviously I have a a while yet but I just wanted to make sure.
How is the gorgeous Jack today? x
Oh my word what a babe! I could just eat him all up! I bet he is boundless! Well, 'til he gets home, fed, and cosy and then you can't move from the computer because you are wearing a doggy foot muff!
Jack is scrummy as ever ;) He seems fine, we are at the V E T later for his boosters, and I think he needs his bum "sorting" (yuk!) so better the vet than me really! We have been to the park this morning, it was a bit busy and muddy so no off-lead. I think he's asleep next door on our bed ATM!
Hi daffi, I change onto adult food from 6 months as I find giving them puppy food for much longer is not required, and can lead to too much weight gain.
I still give puppies boiled or scrambled eggs and goats milk up to around 10 months of age though.
Hi hun, sorry, just checked out, and I am a bit out! I was thinking specifically of my friend who had a large breed pup, and I have now found out (by coincidence, reading my old Puppy care manual that came with Jack's puppy pack!) that for most dogs, around 9 months is fine to begin adult meals, and splitting down to 2 a day if you haven't already.
Most good complete feeds have a separate puppy/junior food, and smaller breeds can be put on adult food at about a year, but bigger breeds need to be on Junior until they are about 18 months. Some small breeds are kept on puppy food all their lives, although you have to watch their weight. Protein levels are important for growth and most Puppy/Junior food is over 25%, with adult maintenance around 19/20%. Anything higher for adults is like to make them hyper. Avoid the flaky coloured type foods and go for the kibbled pellet types.
They should be on two meals a day until a year old, then once is ok, although you can keep them on two if you wish.
