english apples and pears, nuts if you count them, the tangerine, mandarin, satsuma type things, although they are not native to the uk
i havent got a clue, ive just been to sainsburys and they had 2 bananas ,1 pear ,and half a cucumber!!

Sadly "in season" is a phrase not comprehended by the average modern supermarket.  Here we are in the middle of the English apple and pear season (there are over 3,000 varieties).  Do they stock them?  You'll generally find that the three or four kinds of apples they do have are from the other side of the world, picked green and "ripened" artificially, tasting of nothing much.

Even highly seasonal crops such as asparagus and strawberries seem to be available all year round now -- flown in from who-knows-where leaving a cloud of unnecessary jet exhaust.

All this is apparently because we-the-consumers want everything all the year round, and buy everything on price not quality.  Then we spend several times as much on ready-meals as the fresh ingredients would cost...  Perhaps we deserve what we get.
