Can anyone tell me what the numbering on apple label's is for? For instance all Braeburn's appear to have the number 4101, why?

Possibly the number of the rootstock that the apple tree is grafted onto although that usually has an "M" before it or something.
I just thought it was what the store use to price it with. I thought it varied between stores. They seem to key it in and a price comes up.
It's normally a PLU code, as said above, the cashier puts the code into the till and it automatically prices the food by weight or amount.

Most have a list of codes behind the till and they use them on the deli counter and similar and for loose goods such as rolls as well.

The number is an identifying no.from apple grower/packer.
I stayed at an apple farm in N.Z. and all apples packed had to have the farms identifying no. on them before shipping.
