at Start-up message rec'd is:
the following file is missing or corrupted
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\DISPLAY.sys error on config.sys file on line 1
C;\WINDOWS\COMMAND\COUNTRY sys error on config.sys
file on line 2
then
C:\>mode concodepage select=850
Although a recon machine used by a guy doing vol. work for our church it has been fine for records etc despite using Windows 98. The only clue to poss. cause was that he did close down the machine by just switching off before normal shut down
thanks in anticipation.

I think that these files are only used in dos ....
they are used to display the british character set
so if you never use the command line .... you'll never see a problem - because 98 does the job for itself
I'm sure the others can confirm or put me straight if I'm wrong - my memory isn't what it was .... and it's been a while since I worked with 98 (I don't have a 98 machine with me .... nor the time to make one just now)
so let's disable 2 files
c:\autoexec.bat
&
c:\config sys
rather than deleting them rename them autoexec.old and config.old
reboot ... see how you go
