Dogs Sleeping

I am sure there is a word for when animals (dogs, cats etc)just sleep.

What I mean is if a dog is not occupied they tend to just lay down and doze or sleep as if they shut down waiting for something to happen

Diapause - though it is usually applied to insects or embryos - means a state of suspended animation. Would either of these concepts be the word/phrase you are looking for?
