Gestational Diabetes - food ideas
Has anyone been diagnosed with GD got any good ideas for recipes at all?
I have only seen a nurse as yet and havnt been given an appt to see dietician so Im trying to come up with ways of improving my diet without help, and Im craving sugar and sweets :(
Has anyone got any tips. I have avoided sugar since last Thursday and so far all my home blood checks have been a lot lower than the limits the nurse set me which makes it even harder to refuse myself chocolate.
Ive got 10 weeks to go of this, and before anyone says I am well aware of the risk to baby if this went undiscovered, and i wont just ignore the diet.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Any diabetic diet is similar to the GI diet. You need to eat complex carbohydrates inplace of the simple sugars. Basically white rice, pasta should be out of the equation replace all of those with a brown version, sweet potatoes/yam are better for you. Good fruits are apples and berries. Watermelon is very sugary surprisingly stay away from them.
Breakfast should be whole grains, natural yoghurt, eggs etc
Main meal - Your dietician will tell you how many calories to eat each day. She will show you a medium sized plate and tell you that half of that should be veg or saladthen about 2/3 of the remainder should be complex carbs and the left over protein.
Milk is high in lactose so don't frink loads of this either.
Swimming is a good way of raising your activity level when pregnant, and this will help keep those insulin recpetors in check.

apparently basmati rice is the only complex carb white rice and the only nice tasting one, my best mate told me earlier that its all she can recall about diets lol
The nurse i saw didnt even mention snacks so ive been rather hungry by teatime thinking i could only have 3 main meals so as not to mess blood results.
Ive also found some GD menu plans today and they state milk ok and cheese so Im getting more and more confused as advised very little milk.
cant wait to see the dietician and get a list of dos and donts.

Lactose is a simple sugar though, if you have more than 2 glasses a day you are looking for trouble.
You are bang on about basmati rice.
If you have to have a white carb like pasta or bread hen eat it with protein and it takes longer to break down, so you dont overload your body with sugar. If you need any more advice REdcrx, just holler cos I have followed this type of diet for years (apart from when I am being a little fat piggy).
