My son is nearly eighteen and has recently got a new job in an estate agents. He is on terrible wages. I thought the minimum wage was surpose to protect people. He has been told by other members of staff the wage is very low because they are on a basic salary plus commission. But surely their basic has to be minimum wage per hour. Otherwise if they have a property slump they wouldnt have enough salary to live on. Can anyone help with some advice on this subject

Google minimum wage. Top of my head 5.52 per hour.

Mind you , if you pay peanuts you do get monkeys.

from what i can tell, his basic plus commision should not be less than minimum wage.
Minimim wage for 18-21 year olds is 4.60. The 5.52 is for 22yrs and over.
The minimum wage includes commission payments. If, as you say, there's a property slump then they would still need to pay him the minimum wage - though its more likely that estate agents would be making people redundant under those circumstances.
its 3:40 for 17 year olds

His hourly rate must reach the National Minimum Wage.

Commission does not come into it.
