scabies infestation?

let me just say....we are not a dirty family/living in dirty surroundings, last week my daughter 2 yrs old, was playing in some compost in the garden. we washed her hands as soon as we realised, but she'd been "gardening" with her trowel for some time. she ended up with a rash, which is white bumps uner the skin on her fingers, hands and now forearms. two doctors have said its scabies. we've all done the treatment, washed the bedding etc,but this rash is still there, only on my daughter. does anyone know what else it might be?

Scabies can take a few weeks for ich etc to go. Have a read of this.

jayne, as with head lice, it's nothing to do with being dirty. i used to work at a day centre for people with learning difficulties and we had a scabies infestation for about 18 months. in the end, we closed the centre and the health team had to come in and over two days we had to treat all the service users, and staff, so that everyone was being treated at the same time. otherwise, it just goes round and round and people get reinfected.
the important thing is to follow the recommendations to the letter. it's not dangerous, but i know it is a real nuisance.

I got a dose of scabies on a skiing trip in Norway. I was treated for it with derbac which didn't do anything so the docs thought it was just bad exzema. In the meantime I was looking like the elephant man. I finally managed to confirm that it was scabies by passing it on to someone else. The doc then gave me some super strength stuff that burnt a bit (not a lot though) and within minutes the itching had gone (after 3 months). I don't know about young skin but there may be a stronger treatment out there. I still had a rash for a few weeks while my skin repaired but the itching and skin bubbling stopped immediately. Hi jayne.

If your daughter has scabies it has nothing to do with playing with soil in the garden.

You need close skin-to-skin contact with an infected person to catch scabies.
Most cases are probably caught from holding hands with an infected person.
The hand is the most common site to be first affected.

Sleeping in the same bed is another common way of passing on the mite.

Sometimes outbreaks of scabies occur in nurseries.

Any friends or relatives been diagnosed?...Have you been on holiday and slept away from home?

thanks people for your help, but this is why i asked - i can't see any marks on here skin where the mites have buried their heads, nor is she itching at all - she acts as if its not there at all. the two main symptoms are not apparent - could it be something else? all she has a little white bumps - like nettle rash, that blister every evening. its been 6 days since treatment with lyclean and still it looks no better, if not a little worse.

Can you see a different doctor next time just to get another opinion?

just thought i'd say - i had a rash that sounded similar to thi last week or the week befor e- didnt itch or hurt but went to littl eblisters each night - it was cause by a reaction to the sun apparently - my mum gets it as well- even though i had sun cream on and wasnt burnt.

Scabies really have nothing to do with being dirty. They are just a parasite. If you have administered the treatment and waited 15 days or so and the symptoms persist go back to the Doc and get a second opinion and then repeat sometimes it takes a couple of trys to get rid of theses pesky *******.
