Well the South West covers a LARGE area! If for example you were near Ivybridge, Devon then I would suggest a trip to the beach (wrap up!) and do some rockpooling and then build a sandcastle! Bigbury on Sea is a good beach, there is an island which you can walk to at low tide or get the sea tractor at high tide. A walk in Longtimber woods, a trip to the swimming pool. Depends on the age of your children but mine always enjoyed a short train or bus ride. We used to get the train to a local town, have a burger, a look at the trains, a trip to Woolworths (for a 99p car!) and then the train home. That would use up a good portion of the day, keep them amused, and not cost too much. Then they always enjoyed baking, I made a huge batch of fairy cakes and gave them icing, hundred & thousands, glace cherries, chocolate buttons, desicatted coconut etc to decorate them with.
I used to live in the south west entertaining kids there is easy - go to the beach and collect drift wood shells and the like - bring them home and make collages with them - go to the woods or hills and make up a trail with a secret map climb trees - go bike riding - roller skating - picnic in the rain ( but take a brolly ) - sit in the sand dunes and make up stories about the horrible weather being a monster rolling in over the sea and how it will gobble you all up if you dont run for cover quick - get out to the local park with a plastic cricket bat or football and round up your own teams - in other words - PLAY - your children don't need money thrown at them they need your love and attention - these are activities I used to enjoy with my children and now grown up they remember them to this day - their favorite the sand dunes stories because they had my undevided attention - good luck let me now what you end up doing
