advice given is to have an inspection and test carried out every 10 yrs or on change of ownership by an electrician, who is part p registered for domestic work but there is not a legal requirement to do it but do you want piece of mind that in the event of an electrical fault the fuse blows and you do not receive a shock
when you sell you can prove that it is part of your home maintenence carried out, like you are now expected to show records for safety checks on gas appliances.
in the summer i am having an extension built and i will have the old and the new electrics checked out and i will have the consumer unit up graded to a better make than present which only has 7 ways and a rcd shower switch. the new unit will have a split board with at least 12 ways (gaps for breakers) and this will leave me with excess capacity for the future
there is a legal requirement for me to provide an electrical completion certificate for the new wiring to prove it has been tested and inspectedby a competent person.without this i will not get a completion certificate for the extention from the building inspector
this will obviously cost money but it will leave me with peace of mind that my electrical system is safe, particularly the circuit protection system
