how do i get ink stains out of a white cotton shirt?

recently my two year old daughter drew all over over one seats of our cream leather sofa. After much searching on the internet, I came up with a particular sort of alcohol that is used for ink removal. I cannot remember the type but it is used in hairspray. All we had to do was spray some hairspray into a container, and dip cotton buds in it then "erase" the ink. It worked a treat for us, so it must be worth a try on a shirt.......Good luck
