The arm on my turntable has suddenly started moving over to the record but then just returning to its original place without making contact. Ive tried placing it manually but there is resistance and it just returns to its place. Anyone know if this is easily fixable i.e by me, or is it a gonner?
Difficult to answer without knowing the make/model of the turntable. If it's a cheapish model and fully automatic, then it may not be mechanically possible to fix economically.
Some of the more expensive types have a separate lift lever near the pivot point of the stylus arm, which is used to raise and lower the needle/stylus onto specific tracks on the record. Make sure that's in the lower position, otherwise you'll get that 'resistance' you mentioned when you use the cartridge head finger-lift to place the needle onto the record.
fender62, thanks for that site. I'll have to try and work my way through it.
rccatnap, the make and model is, Pioneer pl-x77z. Ive had it a while but it is lightly used. It has been a very good system up to now.
Panic Button, the only 'switch' is one which slides to 45's or 33's. It doesn't matter which one I use the problem still occurs.
Thanks everyone.
