A man walked half a mile to town at 5mph and walked home at two mph arriving home again in 46 minutes, how long did he stay in town

If you wanted to be able to do it yourself:

speed = distance / time and hence time = distance / speed

for going to town therefore:
time = 1/2 mile / 5 mph = 1/10 hour = 6 minutes

coming from town:
time = 1/2 miles / 2mph = 1/4 hour = 15 minutes

If the total time is 46 minutes, then you take away the journey time to get the time spent in town.
