Home network problems

Hi..help please...ok heres the deal, i have a computer (xp pro) and a laptop (xp home) that i want to connect. I have used a crossover cable, now last time i had help settign up my network but my computer since crashed and lost all the info. Anyway...i have it setup manually - used 192.168.0.1 for the pc and 2 for the laptop...all seems to be fine as theres a network icon on the taskbar on both computers. Plus the laptop is able to connect to my broadband thru the pc...BUT i cant seem to be able to access any of the files on either computer. I tried in the run box \\192.168.0.1 to locate both of the comps...even used cmd and tried pining...but nothing works...i just cant seem to beable to acess the files. I do however have a firewall on my pc for broadband and was wondering if this may be the problem? Please please help...or both comps will be flying out of windows :) Em

Have you set up sharing on the directories you want to share?

if you have a software firewall installed (e.g. zone alarm) try turning it off to see if this is the cause of your problem.  I had the same problem myself and the firewall was the cause, there are usually some settings you can change within the firewall software to allow file sharing between pc's and still provide protection from the internet.

Having the network icon in the systray only means that the network card is installed, it doesn't mean it's actually on a network. I noticed you have said you have set the IP's, like Phantaxus says, you also have to set sharing for the drives or folders you want to access on the network. You also have to put all the computers that you want networking on the same workgroup, I know XP puts the system on MSHOME by default, make sure of this by going into Network Identification, just to make sure, and if so, change it so they are. Reboot both computers after this for the settings to take effect. You can access other computers on the Network in different ways. - Through network neighbourhood - \\192.168.0.1 etc - \\ComputerHostName
