Library will have loads of gardening books. Email garden nurseries that have advice lines, Alan Titchmarsh does one, email RHS Wisley or your local RHS. Even florists will advise but pick a quiet time to talk to them, not Saturday morning! Good luck
Choose another florist or use a specialist wedding florist who does not have a shop (lower overheads). Flowers should not be expensive at that time of year and since the majority of cut flowers are now imported from around the world there is mainly only price fluctuations during peak times such as Mother's Day and Valentines.
Unfortunately I can't help regarding what flowers/when (useless), so I hope you get some useful responses.
But whoever you choose as your florist will probably do the venue flowers as well as yours (and the bridesmaids), so if your local one isn't very helpful, do you really want to use them? Take your business elsewhere.
Best of luck.

My daughter was married last year in Sept, She carried a beautiful sheeth of burnt orange coloured 'Cala Lillies'
Her theme was 'Autumn' Bridesmaids were in cream with burnt orange sashes, & carried baskets of small fruit & berries. Buttonholes were red & orange berries,
tables at the rectn were decorated with fruit and berries, golden leaves.
