Nope, I'm afraid I never did, and I think you'll probably recall I've stuck to that position any time it's come up on the AB from the very start. Colin Powell's presentation to the UN was totally lacking in credibility and I remember thinking at the time that he wasn't fooling anyone.
I'm not boasting about that, particularly however; it just makes me feel more cheated. As for whether that makes Putin and Chriac equally dumb, so be it.
The November 02 UN resolution led the way for the return of weapons inspectors threatening Iraq with serious consequences if they failed to comply with the inspections, at the beginning of March 03 Hans Blix reported an "acceleration" of co-operation from Iraq, but that more time was needed, despite this by mid March the US and the UK acting without the backing of the UN and INVADED Iraq.
In August 1990 the UNSC condemned the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait which ultimately led to the first Gulf war. In this instance the US were perfectly happen to comply with the UN and launch operation Desert Storm.
While the UN maybe "useless" you can't have it both ways... back the UN when it suits you but ignore it when it doesn't.
As for the two dossiers released by the UK government, whether they were "sexed" up or not they are an embarrassment of inaccuracies and plagiarism that the UK intelligence services should be ashamed of.
Did I believe Iraq had weapons of mass destruction? I thought it was possible, but also thought that the weapons inspectors should have been allowed to finish their work. If Iraq had failed to co-operate then it was up to the UN to act.
Of course with hindsight it's easy to say these things, but if YOUR actions are going to lead to the deaths of thousands of civilians and your own troops wouldn't YOU make sure the evidence justifying your actions was sound first?
Hmmmm. QM, I for one did not believe there were WMD's in IRAQ. The weapons inspectors did not find any WMD and asked for more time - while Iraq was contained - to complete their job. Iraq was never a threat to western security whatever the propagana of vested interest would have you believe and president Bush knowingly mislead people in his own country by linking Saddam with the 9/11 attacks. If all parties really believed that there were WMD's in Iraq and Saddam was about to use them there would have been no need for unilateral action on the part of the US. The actions of countries such as Germany and France have proved to be right, they did not need 20-20 hindsight to see the war was unjustified on those grounds.
I'm not sure how intelligent Bush is - although your socialism could guide you as to the increased opportunities for the elite in society - but i do worry about his views on issues such as stem cell research and abortion. How can he attack iraq and kill thousands of people so say for a just cause when he wont allow scientists to experiment on a stem cell. I also worry about his handling of the economy, where his record is very poor indeed.
