My daughter wants to grow fruit trees, we have only a limited space and family trees seem to be the answer. Any suggestions about what might be the best to groe?

How about a Victoria Plum it can be pruned to the size you want and gives such lovely fruit (the Royal Horticultral does good book on pruning the plum).
Ken Muir is a top specialist in all kinds of miniature fruit trees. Send for his brochure and you will find everything from a peach tree for a patio, two types of apple on one tree, miniarettes, espallier...all sorts. I have cherry, plum and apple that never grown more than 6 - 7 foot high and about a foot wide.
