out of date food

doesnt matter how much shopping i do, i always can find food out of date, sometimes i was struggling to get rid of food before them out of date as well, but i do hate wasting and feel guilty when i have to throw those food away. have anyone met similar situation?

Yes, When I go shopping I try to buy food that has the longest best by date. The dates are not very long for most foods.

In the shop, you see me rummaging around to the back of the piles, to find a good date.


The corner shop is the worst, especially for milk, and when I rummage around for the best date, usually at the back, as I am not gonna buy milk that goes off tomorrow, the shop keeper does not like it and I tell him I can always take my custom elsewhere!!

I also will 'rummage' for the best date.....but I also check out the section in both Tescos and Sainsburys for stuff near its sell by date-there are good bargains sometimes as long as it isn't fish or chicken,which I wouldn't trust.

I used to work in a supermarket and can tell you how frustrating it is to see "smart' shoppers who make a mess of the display to look for dates at the back of shelves...I wouldnt mind if they put things back in the order that they found them in. Another thing that infuriated me was customers asking for specific products that were not on the shelves: "Have you got any ready rolled pastry in the back?" without realising that its virtually impossible to find a specific item in a warehouse...BUT people have become very selfish and only look out for themselves. At the end of the day, if a customer protests and takes their custom elsewhere, who cares if you're a supermarket?

filth, totally understand how you feel, i worked in cloth retail for 2 years, i hate seeing messy customers!!!! special sale season, they dump clothes everywhere!! so when im doing my cloth shopping somewhere else, im always very understanding to those shop assistant. i tried to find longer date food from back sometimes as well;)) didnt make mess tho!!!

I dont really use freezer, as me and my bf both like fresh food. my bf parents moved out few months ago, in our house two freezer still full of frozen food they left, we tried at begainning to eat, but give up in few days time. i probly have to throw them away as most of them out of date now.

I only 'rummage' at the back for fish and chicken as I want them as fresh as possible and I eat as I buy....I don't like them frozen-the taste and texture change. I DO leave the shelf tidy!

there is always a healthy margin built in to these dates,

two days over will be fine, use your senses!

Worst place to work at in cloth retail has got to be Primark. In the east end of london.

when i was studying in dublin, been working part time in primark there(called 'pennys' in ireland), was awful workplace, i been put in lingerie department, tidy that big round table full of pants!!!so i only stayed over a month then left.

Stop worrying about 'best before' dates...it doesn't mean "bad after". These are only a guide and you just have to have an awareness about food to know what is ok or off.
We never pay any heed to these dates and just use sight and smell to guide us. As a nation we are wasting thousands of tonnes of food needlessly, we could make a huge impact on our carbon footprint by just getti ng real about this.
Only word of warning is to stick with the guidelines when giving the food to very young children and the elderly.
