Do you remember when all letters from any Tax office, armed force civil service dept., or even the phone bill had printed along the top of the envelope: On Her Majesty's Service, in a bold dignified font. I will always remember my first one when I left school and got sent a tax code. I felt so important and grown up! Some American visitors saw it sticking out of my bag and were equally impressed. When did they stop using this ? I know thw phones are now private, but so many others aren't. Was this just another sidelining swipe at the Queen?
No, they stopped it just to save money.
I always think it's a cheek when some government department insists that you return some form or other to them and then expect you to pay for the postage. I think that, for a while, I used to put OHMS on an unstamped envelope but then I got bored.
Of course, you could just send it without a stamp, causing them to pay double. That would put their cost-saving arithmetic out.
Hi, I work for the deparment of the NHS, we have a stack of brown envelopes with On Her Majesty's Service stamped on the front. We can only use them in the internal post & before doing so we have to scribble it out with a biro!!!
