Do any of you use one of these? are there any hidden catches/pitfalls? - thanks......

There are charges either for topping up or on each transaction made. However it probably has more acceptability as a mastercard than solo or electron which you can have for free at some banks with a basic account.
However if you happen to live in Scotland then the Clydesdale Bank will issue a Maestro card, universally accepted, free of charge with a basic bank account no matter what you history. By far the best deal at this end of the market.
