I'm considering buying the PACKARD BELL BG46-P-004 Laptop. I only really use a laptop for word processing, emailing, web searches and spreadsheets. Will it be realiable? Does it have a DVD reader/writer function? Is it any good....(I've heard it isn't well reviewed?) Cheers

I'd normally only give opinion on the machine asked about.... In this case however .... I'll stick my neck out and say don't do it.

nip to your local supermarket .... have a look at a couple of PC mags .... see what they're recomending.

Acer - http://www.acerdirect.co.uk/
have been getting good reviews lately ... but see what's on offer
I believe Packard Bell are a "PC World" only brand (maybe also Curry's who are part of the same group).

Because they are not sold on the "open market" they are rarely reviewed in magazines, you have no idea if they are good value, or if they are reliable.

From what I have read and seen I would say DONT buy a Packard Bell.

Go for a make with a decent brand name: Toshiba, Samsung, Sony, HP, Dell, Acer, and so on.
A quick search on the internet shows the Packard Bell only has a 12" screen. This would be painful to work with on a regular basis.

Most standard laptops have a 15.4" screen, with some having large 17" screens, although these can be rather large and heavy if you plan to carry them around.

How much were you planning to pay for the Packard Bell and we will see if we can find you a better deal.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I was looking at the 12" easynote @ 599 because I travel a lot. I had a Phillips 11" paid 699 and expected it to be a reliable reputable brand, but I had noting but problems with it, now I'm getting a refund. So, I realised I needed some sound advice before I buy my next laptop. Which magazine stated Packard bell were amongst Dell, Toshiba, HP and Apple as the least returned/breakdown laptops........but other information suggested they are not that good really. My main concern is size and weight for mobility - I have a desktop for working when at home..

Cheers.
