Posh stuff, now common.

When you were a child what "things" were considered posh which are now common. Not common like a tup'penny ha'penny scrubber from Cardiff, but common as in everyday.

I am predominently focusing on food, but anything will do.

Off the top of my head:

1) Volivents

2) Salmon in all guises

3) Tiramisu

On the reverse side though Wardy, going to the butchers or a farm shop for your meat/groceries was a common thing to do back a long . Now when I go to mine, it is definitely full of posh people. I am always the only common tramp in the building.

Perhaps it is the few extra years I have on you when the transitional period begun,

I can safely confirm salmon was a very expensive fish years ago, not like today. Even a simple tin of red was then about 2 pounds, say a fiver now!!!

I agree with Wardy, i remember salmon being very posh and very expensive when i was younger. We wouldnt have dreamt of having it as a kid, maybe a tin of pink, that was about it and that was only at xmas.

Maybe, we've always eaten it though and with Italian family tiramisu and fresh coffee were always around too.

Probably but real scampi is still very expensive. The stuff you tend to get nowadays is normally reformed monkfish tail!

in my youth chicken was posh food, expensive and usually only eaten at Xmas. I have no idea why.

Calamari and avocado was quite posh in my neck of the woods.

Chicken and turkey was posh when I was young. Only got it a Christmas. Same with trifle.

As a child all our meals were food ..
basic stuff ..eat or go hungry ....
new shoes were nice ..not posh ..
so Wardy I never think anything is
posh ..and will go where ever ..
as my money is as good if not better ..
as it has been earned not given ...

Tiggs I agree on the advocado thing. Food wise, my eyes were really opened when I met my in laws. It wasn't particularly that they were of a higher class than my family (my family are upper working class, my ex's family are all military folk) but they are much more worldly-wise and cultured than mine, so when we got together, I tasted things like advocado, haloumi, sushi, saki (They are into Japanese stuff big time), fennel, squid, papaya, lobster, proper curry, stuff like that. I'm not with him any more and my in laws are all ***** but I have a more varied palate these days so I have them to thank for that I suppose.

My dad says that when he was younger having an in-door toilet was considered very posh.

I remember always thinking champers was rather posh and now everyone seems to drink it. Or perhaps it's just the company I've been keeping of late.
