general anaesthetic

I am going to have an opp soon I i have never had anything like this done.I was wanting to know what it feels like when you wake up from being under general anaesthetic

Depends on what the op's for, elsha. Most people just wake up like you'd wake up anyway - perhaps feeling a little groggy, and thirsty. Do you mind me asking what you're having done?

You wake up feeling a bit groggy as ice.maiden says,also you may have a sore throat from the tube they put down to help you breathe. Some people are sick afterwards too but that isn't too common.It also depends on how long you are out for and which drugs they use to anaesthetise you.

i remember lying awake on the trolley in the anaesthetic room and saying to the doctor 'is this it then?', and next thing i knew i was awake again in the recovery room, after a 3 hour op with the doctor telling me everything had gone well. i had no feeling of going under, and no feeling of coming round. i did feel a little groggy, but only as if i'd had a really good night's sleep. i had 2 ops within 12 months and it was just like i've described each time.

I've been under 4 times and I'm only 23! You feel tired and depending on what painkillers you've been given you may feel a bit spaced out when you come round! It does depend on what type of op you have because they'll give you larger doses of general anasthetic for larger ops and vice versa.

When they inject you, the anasthetic can feel a bit cold in your arm but within a few seconds your asleep! There's nothing to worry about.

I wouldn�t worry about it at all. I�ve only had one op, which was done as an emergency, so luckily I didn�t have time to anticipate beforehand what it was going to be like. Otherwise I would have been a bit anxious, naturally.

The anaesthetist was really nice and she made it very easy for me when I was on my way to the theatre � next thing I knew, it was all over! You might get some pain when you wake up, but they�ll give you something to lessen it. I didn't feel any other effects at all after waking up.

I was really spaced out when I came to, and was demanding to have a fruit kebab!! what the hell that was about I do not know but it gave all the nurses a right laugh

I have had general anaesthetic 3 times and on one occasion the anaesthetist told me to count back from 10 (like they do in TV programmes). I got to 8 and the next thing I knew it was all over! Good luck - you will be fine.

I had a general last year and came around and began to finish the conversation I was having before I went under! LOL

I was wide awake within minutes, although very thirsty but we got tea and toast - and NOTHING has ever tasted soooo good :)

I wasn't sluggish at all but we all react differently to these things

You can't drive by law for 48 hours after a general BTW

Modern anaesthetics are excellent these days. Any time I've woken up from one, it's been like waking up in the morning only a bit more spaced out. And as Pink-kittens says, the tea and toast is the BEST you'll ever have. Good luck - you'll be fine! x

would like to add that you may get pain in your shoulders if they use gas, don't know why something to do with it rising you may want to ask before the op, just so you don't thing something is wrong afterwards if it happens.

I have only been under once, that was for my wisdom teeth, I was last one in the recovery ward due to low blood pressure and it was magical, I was woken by an angel nurse...she was gently shaking me and saying "Andy wake up , Andy come on sleepy head".... it was a surreal experiance she gave me a great big smile and made me feel great ,she was a right cracker.......... it was the first time in years i had been woken up by another woman other than mrs tufty....lol

OOh forgot to add , I had shoulder problems after that operation , and had to get physio and was on steroids for ages, the doc thought my arm may have fell off the table during the operation and i had torn some ligaments due to it being very relaxed?? anyway its all fine now mind you it is 25 years ago ........ nothing to be worried about elsha you will be fine.....

I have had several general anaesthetics,the most recent was december last year,they wouldn't allow me or any of the other patients to eat or drink for 5 hours after we came round so I have no idea why you lot got tea and toast. I also had an episode of tachychardia after that op which meant I had to stay in overnight (I should have gone home 8 hours after the op).

Just like the others say Elsha. Just like you are waking up but I was screaming out in pain (only because I knew I would get a self administered morphine drip the more I screamed !) lol

I love the going under bit - 123 and you are gone !

I asked my aneasthetist not to let me die, he told me there would be too much paperwork if he did.

I found it a wonderful experience.
