TODAY I READ A COLUMN IN THE NEWS OF THE WORLD. AND I WAS SHOCKED . "Poor Shannon's a victim of class KAREN Matthews has seven kids by five different fathers. She lives in a scruffy council house on an impoverished council estate near Leeds. Her boyfriend, who is ten years younger than her, looks both simple and scruffy, not surprising as Karen herself looks a bit rough around the edges. Karen and her 22-year-old boyfriend, Craig Meehan, live just 100 miles from Kate and Gerry McCann. But it might as well be a million. Karen's little girl Shannon has been missing for 19 days�but you might not know that or even care, judging by the media coverage. The problem is that Shannon Matthews isn't as pretty as Maddie McCann. She's not blonde or cute or beautiful. You don't look at her and want to cry. What do you think?

my personal opinion on the mcanns are they shouldnt have the twins and shouldve been arrested for neglect.
hes smarmy shes not my idea of a good mother leaving 3 small kids for drinks and a pub quiz.
if the mathews were as negligent and we knew id think the same.
at the moment it seems its just a sad cae of a child being abducted.
just saw advert for news channel of year awards on sky.

Who says they weren't as negligent? I read other newspaper stories today, as well as this one, don't need to click the link, and from interviews from the grandparents and the uncle Shannon's life was very unhappy and they seemed to believe she's ran away rather than being abducted.

I think there is a middle ground between how much publicity there was surrounding the mcCann case and how little there is about the Matthews case - I am not talking here about the gutter press, but credible news reporting.
My personal opinion for the last week or so was the same as the journalists. Shannon isn't middle class or cute enough to warrant the support of the general public. Is it the public who are shallow, or the news professionals who take that decision on our behalf?
It is upsetting that both children are still missing, regardless of what we feel about their parents.
The police have been keen to stress that despite appearances, Shannon isn't a street wise tyke who is likely to have run away in the hope that her mother would reward her with something when she is found safe and well. She is a vulnerable, shy 9 year old girl.

What these articles about Shannon and Madeleine's parents seem to forget is that there are two little girls out there missing. It doesn't matter if their parents are middle class doctors or single parents on council estates. The children are the innocent parties here but the papers are more interested in gossip about their families.
I have long thought that the press handles similar events unevenly. Some murders for instance are front page and have much more coverage than others. When others have died in a similar way as Gary Newlove why is the press coverage so scant for them? Not all child disappearances and murders are treated like the Sarah Payne case either. Strange indeed.
I think the press use some kind of unknown barometer in judging how to cover these cases. Is it to do with the shock factor? How much publicity a strong family can raise? Some families cannot stomach that at such a time.
I consider my family working class but not council housed, nor doctors. When a child in my family was murdered the press coverage was intense. Indeed, as I was away on holiday, the first I knew was seeing it on the front page of the morning paper.
This was some years ago when child murders were less frequent. The family did no interviews or appeals. I vividly recall 3 full pages in the Sunday paper tracing my relatives last day and what happened to her. Not all subsequent murders were treated the same by the press. I had reason to notice. The intensity of coverage no doubt helped to find her killer quickly. His guilt was another front page headline.
