I have several stainless steel kitchen items i.e. extractor, cooker, toaster, etc. I have major problems cleaning them as this always results in a streaky or smudgy finish. I have tried different cleaning agents and detergents without success. Any suggestions please?

did I imagine you had to rub with oil for shine? This would work ion extraxtor hood, but not so useful for toasters etc which get handled!
I just use hot water and fairy liquid, I wash them with a dishcloth, rinse them and then buff them up with a very clean cloth - sparkling!
Apologies if this sounds like I am stating the obvious but have you tried stainess steel cleaner? I bought some of this stuff

in Debenhams once and its fantastic. Its cleans really really well and gives a great shine. And its on offer too!
Mine just look dull and unloved! I hate cleaning anymore than is necessary for basic hygiene!! ;0)

The top thing for cleaning stainless steel, chrome, glass etc is an E-cloth. They don't have any chemicals in them and last for over 300 washes. They are recommended by loads of appliance manufacturers like Neff and Miele etc. I have been using them for years so I know how good they are, definitely no smears. I got mine in a kitchen shop. Check out the web site www.e-cloth.com
our kitchen fitters recommended baby oil for our cooker hood. have you tried vinegar and/or bicarbonate of soda?
My kitchen fitter also suggested baby oil (I thought it was a bit odd!!). However he confirmed that is what is used in show homes. I was so impressed with the finish I use it all the time now on stainless steel and chrome. It is also works wonders on black work surfaces!!
I clean first with dishwasher tablet disolved in very hot water. when dry rub in baby oil.
I agree, baby oil every time.
Mr Sheen (as in the polish) do a metal polish, it is fantastic on stainless steel, you can buy it at asda, don't know where else.
use a micro fibre cloth and lots of elbow grease
Forget all the expensive different cream, sprays, cleaners etc ... Just use baby oil you get a lovely shining finish with very little elbow greese needed.
