I have just been to my little daughters (she is 10 years old) open evening at school. She had answered a question in her geography lesson - What shape is the World.

She put Round - she got it wrong.

What do you think ?

What a miserable stuffy teacher !!!

She knew what she meant, round as opposed to flat so ships don't drop off the edge, but what on earth did she expect ? - not spherical, slightly ovoid, bulging a bit around Madagascar ?
I was gonna say more or less what whiffey said but by time I logged in he had said it lol

Bless her, she is only 10, I never knew the world wasn't round til I was about 36 lol Her teacher should win Meanie of the Year Award
just shows what kinda schooling is out there these days, my wee niece experiences the same sort of thing, teachers think they know it all - problem is kids believe their teacher
I just asked my 10 year old son what shape the world is and he immediately said spherical. But then my son has Asperger Syndrome and is on the talented and gifted register. He can usually be found with his nose in a reference book of one sort or another. He is definitely not a normal 10 year old in this respect but its all part of his condition.
I am surprised this teacher was not a bit more lenient with her marking though.I doubt many 10 year olds would have answered correctly.
Well well, every day a school day! I always thought the world was round!
Technically the Earth is an oblate spheroid. The reason behind this is because the planet is spinning. Inertia and momentum means that more material is forced out from the middle which obviously means the top and bottom are sucked in slightly.

Although, at 10 years old I'd be going with round unless we'd had a geography lesson that told us differently just before that

Hey Daffy, that's fantastic your son having his nose in a reference book all the time. My daughter reads and reads and reads (non - fiction a lot of the time) and she is scoring 6's in her SATS which I am led to beleive is good and well above average for a 10 year old. You say that your little boy isnt normal - well I beg to differ if you dont mind my saying so - he is obviously very very bright.

My friend has a son with Aspergers. I hired a joiner some time ago who made a complete pigs ear of putting a curtain pole up. My friends little boy had it fixed in no time whatsoever, along with sorting my DVD player for me, and unblocking my CCTV Camera! He also knows EVERY REEL and how they spin and what kind of payouts they give and when in our local. ! a TRUE RAIN MAN !

Well done for obviously fantastic style of parenting.

Thank you to everyone who answered ! Incidently - I am 40 and I didnt know that the world wasnt round until tonight.

My daughter however, maintains that we learn 4 new things a day ! Start counting tomorrow you guys lol !

Best Wishes.
