On my gas fire you turn the gas dial to ignite, push the ignite button in, the gas ignites, you then hold the gas dial in for 20-30 secs and the fire is supposed to stop on but unfortunately mine does not. Any ideas why not.

the pilot light warms the end of a thermocouple ,which holds open the gas valve to allow gas to flow as required.
this means that your themocouple is not doing that and needs to be replaced.the part price can vary from �10-�30 depending on whether it is a universal one or a dedicated one.then there will be a fitting charge.

good answer but not definately the cause. nine times out of ten it is because the pilot head is blocked and the flame is either not touching the thermocouple tip at all or the flame is weak and floppy and not heating the thermocouple sufficently or a sudden draught thru the room or down the chimney lifts the flame away from the thermocouple thus shutting the fire down.
in most cases a good service and clean is enough to solve the problem.
