Tragic as it was, but i guess no one will ever really know...going by what little i've heard/read about him i thought that it was probably suicide. Spookily enough there is a guy who busks in the west end of Glasgow who does an amazingly close rendition of 'last goodbye'.

Im not sure it was suicide, Jeff was at a point in his life where a lot of things seemed to be falling into place: he was just starting to get back to a more 'non-mainstream' feel in his music, which he was happy with, and he seemed to be dealing effectively with the issues surrounding his relationship with his father.
Jeff's been described as reckless by more than a few people, and that could have been the reason for his spontaneous decision to swim in the Wolf river, fully clothed. I think it was probably an accident, but as cobweb says, we probably will never know. Sniff.
