The agricultural sector would be in dire straits without the immigrants willing to do the hard graft on the land. Labour which can net workers up to �25,000-a-year with overtime.

But that's not enough to entice some of the local lads picking up their dole money in Peterborough. A constant trickle of young men are in and out of the office collecting their state benefits. But there's little appetite for taking one of those vegetable-picking jobs of up to �7-an-hour. One group of lads:

Job for �7 an hour - "I prefer to sign on than do that" "No mate I'd prefer to sign-on than do that."

Waldo - I said that even the commission who wrote that report do not have figures about from where the teachers are. You only have to look around. Get out of your attic more. There is a 3rd world war going on out there. You are spending too much time looking for the facts on net. LOOK AROUND but only once you are outside. I am sure last time you went to a hospital or a dentist, you were treated by an immigrant.

I agree with you but only just. New culture here ( I don't know where it came from, usually America) is too demanding from employers, Compensation is only one for example. Other day a woman slipped and fell because of a grape in one of the super store (I think customer in this instance) and is claiming a huge sum of money. She might have thrown grape herself. Same is with workers. Employers are fed up. Low wages are not in anyone's control as cost of life here is a lot higher than the other countries.

We dont have to study degrees to obtain employment, he went as a mature student to gain the plethora of knowledge that he has been able to place elsewhere in his life rather than in the work place.

I did a Masters Degree in Psychology for the very same reason. I now sustain a career in Visual Media whilst being on a Radio Channel similar to Loose Women.

Shouldnt I have studied that degree then ?

Just wondering, not meaning cause any offence or anything but I am simply amazed that someone who clearly illustrates himself as bright as what you are could be so snall minded to make comments such as that Vegetable Pickers are not qualified to do anything eles.

It makes me mad as hell, that's what I think. I work at the local hospital for �6.43/hr. There is something wrong with a Benefits system that makes it more attractive to scrounge off the state than have pride and self worth in earning and providing for your family. I wish the Government was as keen to save money by routing out the lazy so-and-so's and cheats and forcing them to work as it at taxing the a*** off decent hard working people. Aaaaaahhhhh!

RaggyRoman, They probably work in the kitchens because they can't find anything else to do. It is exceptionally hard to find employment, whether you are highly qualified or not. I have just got myself a job as a lab technician after being unemployed for about a month. I have 11 high GCSEs passes, which isn't highly qualified, but I have my reasons for why I couldn't continue onto my Alevels. But fingers crossed I will be continuing this year.
My partner has been unemployed for about 2 months, has GCSEs and some A levels, but his lack of confidence knocks him back when it comes to getting a job.

I say, good for them (the polish) who are working, and proud of doing it. Especially since it seems such a backbreaking job. If they're gonna take the jobs we DON'T want, then who are we to complain?
But I do think that if you are unemployed you should have a time limit before you either get taken off the dole, or say the government finds a job (say clearing litter off the streets, cleaning graffitti, local council kinda jobs) for you in order to keep your benefits. If you don't comply then the benefits should be taken away.
