Yes there are generators that could be hooked up to your supply via a two-way switch, and some that can kick into action when the power fails

You can buy a small petrol driven generator for a few hundred pounds from screwfix or machine mart and similar comanies. This would run for a number of hours and generate enough electricity to use lights and tv - but not a kettle or electric oven. Hope this helps.

How much do you want to run? Some lights and the central heating controller and pump is not too bad, but if you need real power it will start to cost.
