Can anyone list the processes that need to be running in XP. I have a virus and need to stop the process in task manager - will this work? Thanks in advance

go into run and type msconfig, then in the general tab, unclick run startup services. Then reboot, you will get several warnings saying that you have done a diagnostic startup. Once XP is started, use task manager to see what processes are now running as these should be the minimum required (there were 14 on mine)
PS. You could run your anti-virus program at this point and it should be able to remove any processes that it notmally can't because they are started
Better still, as Norton internet security advises, is to run the UP TO DATE virus scanner in safe mode. The virus wont be running as safe mode only starts all necessary windows services. The AV checker will still pick it up tho. There should be no problems in removing it is the infected file is "not in use". Although a good idea, the problem with MSConfig is that you might accidently stop something necessary to start the computer properly. BTW, the number of legit processes running depends on what programs are installed, so unless you know what your doing, be veeeerrry careful. PM

I asked a similar question last week and was directed to this site http://www.answersthatwork.com/

Open it, go to the 'Task List', and it has all the information on 'background' programs you could possibly need.
