I don't do H.G.V but I know a few who do. You're gonna start out doing agency work (I think they call it general haulage) were basically you'll go all over the country chasing your load. It depends what you want to do, I think the good money is in long-haul (or tramping as some call it) P&O seem a good firm to get on for from what I understand, alot of what you do will be bonus based and that'll always be made that little bit harder to get.
I'm no expert on it, so don't take it as gospel, I think it's a good job for a single fella. Personally I like to go home to my own bed, that's why I work.
Good luck in your choices.

My son is an HGV driver and he earns the same money driving.20K . .He works for Travis Perkins in Norfolk .It cost him about a grand to get his HGV2 licence .TP trained him for a crane operators licence too. This is in Norfolk and unemployment here is quite high in places so for this area he earns a good salary .The opportunities are there if you want them and it does not have to be agency work etc .
The following rules apply
Cat C1 3500kg to 7500kg - age 18
Cat C (HGV2) over 7500kg - age 21
Cat C+E (HGV1) over 7500kg with trailer over 750kg - age 21
You must have Cat C already before you can take Cat C+E however you do not need to have Cat C1 before you take Cat C.
