Why are the BNP considered to be such an extreme political party when their manifesto seems little more than common sense?

I do not consider

  • "repatriation" of all non-white people to their "ancestral homelands" within ten years
  • persecution of all Muslims on the pretext of fighting Islamic fundamentalism
  • banning abortion
  • banning gay relationships
  • abandoning all human rights legislation
  • trade barriers, protection and restriction of free international trade
  • tolerating members with serious criminal records
  • making crude anti-Semitic remarks about Michael Howard
  • denying or joking about the Holocaust

to be "common sense".

That should keep you going for a bit dreamscape!!
common sense ..ha ha..they are a bunch of thugs and stir up racial hatred,,the bnp are a waste of space and appeal to the criminally minded minority..their are good and bad in all races of people and unfortunately they fall into the bad catergory.. mullein

You are obviously proud of the fact that you are a racist. I'm proud of the fact that I'm not a racist. Therefore I consider the fact that the BNP exist at all to be beyond belief. I highly doubt you'll get anyone on here that agrees with you.

No, I do agree with the fact that the BNP exists - they are a legitimate Political Party - and aslo to be a member of the BNP does not infer racism. They have a number of other manifesto points which are valid - though I do agree that a lot of them are not (in my opinion).

Saying that they should not exist is pretty much the same as saying that anything I disagre with should not exist.

I would also say that calling them a bunch of thugs and appeal to the criminally minded minority is an outrageous slur against many people.

Also, before anyone says that I am a liberal do gooder, I do feel I should point out (as I have done previously) that I am of Asian origin, and if the BNP ever came to power (which IMO is highly unlikely thanks to the majority of people) I would be repatriated!

I do believe in Voltarism though - I may not agree with what you say but I will defend with my life the right for you to say it!

(well maybe not my life, but you get the point)

How can someone who is a member of the BNP not be racist? Also, I didn't say that I don't think the party shouldn't exist, I said that I find it staggering that it does exist in Britain. Two different things.

There is rarely any degree of common sense at either end of the political spectrum.  I can only assume that that question was posed as a wind up as the general views of the majority of ABers are evident.

In the main BNP followers want to blame anyone but themselves for being less sucessfuly than identifiable minority groups (by what definition is possible).  Time and again it is proven that it is their own inadequecies that create their own problems.

To answer the question posed, it is because a majority of people do not consider the manifesto common sense that they are considered an extremist party.

In the same way that if someone joins CND they can still support nuclear power.

A lot of people have joined the BNP due to this governements ridiculous use of positive discrimination. It is easy to vote / join a party that has outlandish manifesto pledges in the knowledge that they will never get in. It does however, send a message to the government in power.

As for Bernado's note:

Banning abortion & banning gay relationships are a fairly standard thing in the biggest democracy in the world.

tolerating members with serious criminal records - I would be curious as to how old these were - and are criminals not allowed to be members of political parties - I beleive Richard Branson was convicted of VAT fraud when he was a young lad.

Making crude anti-semantic remarks about Michael Howard - a person did this not a party - and if views are not allowed to be aired - lets get rid of all the papers.

Denying or joking about the holocaudt - I am not sure that this is again anything to do with their manifesto.

Who cares ? They are going nowhere anyway !
I think the BNP can have a very important role to play in world of the future. I refer of course to vivisection.

I have not read their manifesto but, purely as a general point, I would like to say that something that seems quite reasonable and commonsensical on the face of it, can actually cause unforeseen, extreme consequences when people "adopt it" and start "practising it".

I find it quite interesting that you seem to be able to add articles to the BNP manifesto that I either can't find, or simply don't exist.  Re-patriation in 10 years, I can't find that, denying the holocaust certainly isn't on the manifesto and as for abandoning all human rights legislation, again this is a mis-truth. As I understand it they want to abandon the European Treaty of Human Rights, as this is a piece of legislation that seems to have been introduced to protect the rights of economic migrants under the guise of asylum seekers, rapists, paedophiles and a whole host of otherwise unsavoury characters.  I think perhaps, you should at least get your facts straight before leveling such charges and I would like you to consider that perhaps you are the one guilty of being ignorant not the BNP.  I would also like to say that I am not be a member of BNP, just someone who is disillusioned with the 3 main parties, and looking for a viable alternative.

In response to georgit, you are quite clearly the one guilty of ignorance as you have assumed that I am a 'proud racist' ,as you put it, purely on the strength of the initial question I posed.  To say all members of the BNP are racist I find deplorable.  This is no more true than to say all Labour party members are working class, manual workers and all Conservatives are blue blood aristiocrats.  I feel that perhaps a lot of BNP supporters are merely normal people who are gravely concerned that their traditions and way of life are being undermined by the powers that be, and that the continuous errosion of 1000 years of sovereign rule to unelected politicains on mainland Europe is to the detrement of Great Britain.  Life is not as black and white as ignorant lefties such as yourself would like to believe, so do yourself a favour, stop dragging your knuckles on the floor and arm yourself with some facts before answering what was a simple question.
