I've had this done but had it done is hosp under a general (long story lol)
On day 3 I had to see the nurser at my GP's surgery to have the surgical dressing removed and the wound redressed. I had a partial wedge removal that was removed right down the toe to the root, so my toe was cut from the cuticle to the knuckle. The stitches didn't heal as well as they should have so I was visiting the GP's surgery for weekly visits for 6 weeks to have the wound redressed but in the end I decided to take the dressing off and within 3/4 days the wound had dried up and started to close - the cut to the knuckle would not heal.
It took a good 5 months before I would wear closed in shoes again although had the cut healed as it should have done I would guess it should take around 3 months before you can wear shoes in comfort
Watch out for signs of it coming back as wedge/partial removals aren't always successful.
All together I had to wear open toe shoes for well over 2 years because I put up with it for 12 months and then had to wait 6 months for an appointment at the hosp then another 6 months to go in to have it done - I looked very silly walking in the snow in sandals, I can tell you :)
