bit morose tonight so a suitable post and my answer is forthcoming.
What is the most emotionally distressing thing youve ever had to do that didnt directly involve close family or friends.????
Allow me to tell you a story......... I once owned a dog, a miniature schnauzer called 'Kim'.he was about 20 months old at the time. My personal circumstances changed and I was no longer able to look after him so I arranged to give him to a friend who I knew would give him a good home. At the time my friend lived in Chicago and I was in Los Angeles. With all the arrangements made I found myself and Kim driving up Interstate 5 to LA Airport on a bright Sunday morning. I was to find the TWA cargo area where I then was told to find a suitably sized travel cage for Kim. Up to this point he was having a whale of a time running all over the place, but when I tried to put in the cage he started to whine and cry. I was told by the authorities that he would be well cared for, but I could not stay with him as the warehouse was a secured area. My lasting image of Kim was of him looking at me through the bars of the cage as I walked away and his pitiful crying echoing round that vast empty warehouse.
Some hours later I got a call from my friend to say that Kim had arrived safe and sound in Chicago but that, curiously the fur was matted and sticky on the back of his head and his back. Well, after quite an investgation it turned out that the cabin crew had taken Kim to their hearts and taken him into the galley for the flight. unfortunately one of the crew had accidently splilled orange juice over him and in the time frame of the flight had not had the time to clean him up A quick shower and shampoo and Kim was right as rain and he remained with my friend and his family for the next 14 years....god bless him

Hi bigmamma. Thank you - I'm feeling better now, but sorry - even though this happened over 3 year's ago, if I think of that little dog.....well...I hope someone saw in her what I did.
Even driving back home, I was in two minds whether to go back and get her. When i GOT home, I was in two minds whether to go back the next day....that's how much she affected me, but the reason I didn't buy her, was because of her history. The poor little thing'd been mistreated, and because I have children, and even younger ones come to the house, I couldn't risk the chance of her turning on a child - or anyone. It's so very sad though. xx

A few years ago I was driving down the motorway to visit a very dear old school friend who I only visit every year or two. It was a Saturday at 6pm at the end of November and the weather was terrible. The motorway was busy with traffic coming out of the city on one of the last shopping saturdays before xmas.
I was in no hurry, so as I watched cars fly past in the fast lane, I tootled along in the slow lane until I saw strange movement and smoke up ahead.
I came upon a multiple car crash. One car has 3 or else 4 sisters in it and had overturned, throwing 2 of the girls out of the car and bouncing them down the motorway. There were other cars with people obviously in a lot of pain. There was car debris everywhere and I pulled over to the side of the road to phone the amblance/police etc or to see what I could do to help. Myself and a few other people did things like getting the oncoming cars to put on their hazard lights to stop any further cars crashing into the wreckages.
Anyhow, after a while a man who had stopped to help came up to me and was carrying a baby. I thought the baby was his until he said that he had taken it from a woman who had been involved in the crash. He was only about 6 months old and was in one of those little 'ski suits'. He looked lovely and fast asleep but it bothered me that he wasn't crying. He should have been crying because he would have been woken up so suddenly anmd it was so cold and wet. I asked the mother (who was injured and very shocked) whether he had been crying and she said "No - he is such a good boy he hasn't cried a bit".

My heart sank. Thankfully the ambulance arrived on the other side of the motorway just at that time so I grabbed tha baby and ran with him to the paramedics. His poor Dad was so sure that his wife and baby were ok that he was at the back of the crash directing traffic. I got him and brought him to the ambulance.
My sister worked in the hospital that the baby was brought to and although I heard that he had died on the news later that night, she was able to describe that his injurys were similar to 'shaken-baby syndrome' where because the car had spun 2-3 times, his little brain was shaken around his skull killing him.
I found it very hard to get out of my head and I think of his poor parents often. What I would love to know is how or when the case is due to go to court to find out what happened exactly; however I don't know how to find this info.
Hope this isn't too 'heavy' although strangely it feels good to talk about it again.

Oh lol!! Well I come from the borders of Lincolnshire originally - wonder why it's always "bordering"???! Anyway, Yorkshire has some beautiful areas. Are you at all familiar with Arkengarthdale?
Some of my ancestors were Yorkshire people. They can be traced back to the Norman Conquest.
Like you, I now live in the wonderful wilds of Derbyshire - sort of! Beautiful scenery up in the old Peak District!
