If you only receive the statutory minimum redundancy pay, the following applies:

You�ll get:
* half a week�s pay for each complete year of continuous service below the age of 22
* a full week�s pay for each complete year of continuous service between the ages of 22 and 40, and
* a week and a half�s pay for each complete year of continuous service above the age of 41

Bednobs must be used to public sector arrangements - seem always keen to lob taxpayers' monbey at the problem. One week per year of employment is more normal with a minimum figure of 6-8 weeks salary.
Scrooge employers just pay out the statutory minimum as per Chris' post above.
