Coventry City council employ care assistants, both male and female on a 'relief' basis. They are required to work when a vacancy occurs on a shift at very short notice. They are all fully qualified memebers of staff. They can work on any day of the week but are only paid at a flat rate and do not receive any enhanced payments for week end or Bank Holiday wotking. This seems to me to be very unfair. Is it legal?
Yes, as Einstein says, it is not illegal. The terms and conditions of their employment should be covered in their employment contracts and I assume that they have accepted these relief conditions.
