I have just bought two old sandstone gargoyle type carvings that have the head of a lion, tongue out and paws as if begging with what looks like the rear of a turkey or similar bird. Does anyone have any idea what they are or represent?

A griffin or gryphon has the head of an eagle and the body and tail of a lion. I think what you've got is a manticore.
