At the age of 39 he was elected to consulship (highest and most revered office in the Roman Republic). At roughly 40 years of age, Caesar had already received the highest political honors the Roman state could offer and his career was just beginning!
At the feast of the Lupercal in February, 44, Mark Antony offered Caesar a crown (the diadem of the Hellenistic kings). Caesar refused it along with the title of king, but doubts remained that he had personally arranged for the public offer. Some historians think he staged the incident simply to destroy the rumors he desired kingship. As Napoleon noted succinctly, "If Caesar wanted to be king, he would have got his army to acclaim him as such." But doubts still remained. In 45BC the senate vorted for him to have dictatorship for life and divine worship.....hence, the last dictator of Rome. He was stabbed to death in 44BC at about the age of 57.
The word 'Caesar' has since became a word used to describe ruler or king, such as tsar, czar etc....
And the month July is named after him as well. I totally recommend Caesar by Christian Mieir (sp?) for reading up on a truly fascinating historical figure.
Incidentally (Kaiser is another btw)....
caesar was the title assumed by the Roman emperors after Julius Caesar. In the New Testament this title is given to various emperors as sovereigns of Judaea
without their accompanying distinctive proper names.
The Jews paid tribute to Caesar and all Roman citizens had the right of appeal to him. The Caesars referred to in the New Testament are Augustus, Tiberius, Claudius and Nero.
