Death continued, Facing death
16 Answers
My last question and some of the very interesting answers made me think about death a bit more about my own demise.
Being an Atheist I fear nothing in death except death itself, by this I mean I fear anything that will kill me as is only human but I don't fear anything after death.
When I die, I cease!! No after life.
I find that very comforting, no heaven or hell just nothing, finito!! The end!!
Does a religious person fear death or where they may go, can any believer truly believe they have not sinned and not fear hell?
Which is the easier to face, being a believer or an Atheist, I know my own answer is being an Atheist but what are your views?

Hope you and carakeel ar okay.
I am not sure what I believe about the afterlife, if any.
The one thing I am afraid of is, probably is the process of dying itself and where it takes place.
I would hate to die in a hospital alone. Very selfish of me I know but I would want to be with my Husband at home. Sadly, no-one can dictate those terms.
After that, I am gone from this world. Total closure.

This is a bit of a morbid day for you Ratter isn't it. I'd prefer not to think about death but I do agree thereis a finality to it that I agree with you about.
The only thing is I would like to be in control of it to make sure it was quick and pain free for me but having been able to make provision for those I am responsible for both financially and mentally too.
Nothing worse than being taken away when you are not ready eh?

Well Mr Bounty, being so sure about there being no God is very easy, so being sure about nothing after death kind of follows really!
I find God to be a crutch for weak people to lean on, sorry if that offends but its how I see it.
Ive heard all the stories of ghosts etc but dont believe in any of them, just peoples minds playing tricks etc.
Im equally sure many of you will tell me a story to disprove me but when I see a ghost, only then will I believe!

I dont really know whether I fear death or not per se. Perhaps as you say the actual event rather than anything afterwards, although I would be concerned whether my surviving family would be well looked after. I dont believe in ghosts either.
I suppose the difference between us (apart from being a Catholic aka a false Christian) is that I believe somewhere in the ether our loved ones are waiting to welcome us to a new existence. Maybe this is heaven, who knows. I certainly do not live life thinking about judgement and hell, otherwise this life would be one of constant torment. Life is complicated enough, without that sort of interference from God, or gods.
My belief may provide some (possibly misguided or fanciful) comfort in the ensuing inevitability, but then thats my outlook on life and the thereafter and nobody has yet proven me wrong.

I think your question leads on to a contradiction in terms.
Surely, if anybody fears anything after death, then surely they must believe????
If they believe, they have nothing to fear because they will be moral, law abiding Christians and will enter the kingdom of Heaven.
I believe this is called a tautology.
The only scenario I can envisage where somebody has something to fear is a practising diabolist who upon his death bed realises he does in fact not want to go to Hell !!!!
